For Prospective and Newly Admitted Nursing Students at Regional Campuses (LaGrande, Klamath Falls, Ashland)
The staff of the Joseph B. Trainer Student Health Service at the Portland campus welcomes you to OHSU, and provides the information below regarding the student group insurance plan. As you will have been informed by the OHSU School of Nursing, there are certain requirements that must be met as a condition of your enrollment.
The Portland Campus Student Health Service provides informational assistance and administrative services to all OHSU students regarding one of these requirements: the mandatory student group major medical health insurance program. This section of our website, devoted to you nursing students at the regional campuses, is to introduce you to the insurance section of our website. You should study it carefully, including the benefits and exclusions; the waiver program (for those of you who already have group insurance that qualifies for the waiver); various deadlines for such things as enrolling family members or getting approval for a waiver application, etc.
When you first are enrolled into this insurance program, you may not receive your insurance wallet card for up to two weeks, and it will be mailed to the address you gave OHSU when you enrolled in school. (If using that address will delay your getting your card in a timely fashion, please let us know the better address so we can pass that information on to the insurance company. At the bottom of this page is information about how to reach us so that we might help you. If you should need to seek medical care before you have your wallet card, you should save any receipts so that you can file an insurance claim. If your provider’s office will not provide you service because you don’t have this information, we may be able to help you if you call us, but it would have to be during our office hours when we are here. If you have time, you may call us to help you expedite getting your card.)
At the time of this writing, our current insurance carrier is ODS. Each year in the late spring, this may change, and we will try to update this website as quickly as possible if that happens. There will be a place on our website for detailed information about your insurance plan. Currently, if you have questions about your benefits you should first check in the section of this website entitled “ODS Benefit Info” and look in the handbook found at the bottom of that ODS home page. If you don’t find an answer to your question in the handbook, you should call customer service at ODS.
How to reach us: If you still need help, you should feel free to contact us at the Portland campus OHSU Joseph B. Trainer Student Health Service and we will try to help you. Our insurance manager is Brad Niles, and you can reach us at 503-494-8665 or fax questions to 503-494-2958, or email us at askshs@ohsu.edu. If you do contact us, please provide as much identifying information about yourself as you can, including your name, birthdate, which program you are in as well as the nature of your problem.
Although the Portland OHSU Student Health Service administers the health insurance program for all OHSU students, which includes students on the regional campuses, we do not administer the Student Health Services, including the immunization requirements, for regional campus students. If you choose to browse through the rest of this website, the non-insurance-related sections, keep in mind that except for the insurance sections, this website is written by this Portland OHSU Student Health Service to inform students on the Portland campus only.
Thus, you should check with the administrators of the OHSU School of Nursing at your campus to learn about other student services available to you, as well as regarding other health-related student concerns, such as the immunization requirements, for students at your regional campus.
